ADMProject and Diaspora for Peace Unite for Kenyan Relief
February, 2008
The disputed December elections in Kenya have resulted in violence along ethnic lines that many are already describing as “ethnic cleansing”. This violence has resulted in massive loss and displacement of innocent lives and extensive destruction of property. Sadly, the majority of those affected are innocent women, children and the physically-challenged individuals of specific communities. Most of the displaced families are now taking refuge in churches, stadiums and police barracks, leaving everything behind and, in effect, creating internal refugee camps. But the recent burning alive of families seeking sanctuary in a church indicates that senseless and deadly lawlessness is spiraling out of control.
On January 30, representatives from Diaspora for Peace, a Baltimore-based group of concerned Kenyans living in America, met with the African Diaspora Medical Project leadership to discuss the urgency of providing humanitarian relief to help the displaced families meet their daily needs. As a result of this dialogue, the ADMProject has agreed to partner with Diaspora for Peace in their efforts to help Kenyans in need and at risk.
Non perishable foods (powdered milk, mashed potatoes, cereal, noodles, and other instant foods, etc.) toothpaste, diapers, pull-ups, personal hygiene supplies, sanitary pads, clothes, etc. are all needed. Medical supplies of all types are also needed as overcrowded and deteriorating sanitary conditions and disruptions in delivery of health services are beginning to have their impact. Monetary donations are encouraged and will be used to purchase some necessities and to defray the shipping costs, estimated to be approximately $15,000.
The Diaspora for Peace has arranged for supplies be shipped in containers by air and then picked up by the American Red Cross in Kenya who will oversee the delivery to sites in need, irrespective of ethnic group. Ways to assist:
